Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this two day program, participants will:
- Be familiar with a range of effective acupuncture methods that specifically address sports injuries and their complications.
- Recognize the effects of acupuncture on inflammation, strength, flexibility and endurance and identify appropriate corrections.
- Appreciate the benefits of integrating a variety of modalities in clinical treatment.
- Be prepared to apply enhanced clinical options to the diagnosis and treatment of sports injuries.
PROGRAM
Day One: Saturday, June 12, 2010
8:30 – 9:00 Registration
9:00 – 12:30 Acupuncture and Performance Enhancement – Kim Bowie, R.Ac, BScPT, CAFCI
In the sports community acupuncture is commonly used as an analgesic, a therapeutic intervention for pain and injury. Less is known about its use in affecting physical performance parameters of healthy individuals, particularly athletes. A summary of TCM philosophy and current research on the effects of acupuncture on strength, flexibility, and performance will be presented.

1:30 – 5:00 Acupuncture: Anti-inflammatory Tool of the 21st century – Doug Freer, BscPT, CAFCI
Dr. Joseph Wong has always presented the concept that Anatomical Acupuncture is the best Anti-inflammatory agent available to therapists. Doug will present current research that supports this theory. In the workshop, participants will learn about assessment and treatment with acupuncture to address common spinal nerve root irritations, knee osteoarthritis, shoulder dysfunction, elbow dysfunction and low back pain.

Day Two: Sunday, June 13, 2010
8:00 – 11:30 Gokavi Transverse Technique in Treatment of Sports Injuries – Cynthia Gokavi, MBBS, CAFCI
The GTT is a dry needling acupuncture technique with high frequency electrical stimulation, used in the treatment of acute and chronic myofascial pain syndromes and dysfunction which are a result of common sports and soft tissue injuries. Dr. Gokavi takes a systematic approach, including points for enhancing athletic performance, stretching exercises of the acupuncture meridians and correcting muscle imbalances due to shortened muscles syndromes with active trigger points.

12:30 – 4:00 Acupuncture Treatments for Sports-Related Injuries – Ed Gray, DC, CAFCI
Do you see extremity injuries associated with sports training and competition in your practice?
Dr. Gray will describe and demonstrate various strategies for integrating adjunctive modalities of treatment, and selecting effective acupuncture points, for this specific application.

About the lecturers:
Ed Gray, DC, CAFCI
Dr. Edward Gray has been a practicing Chiropractor since 1996. He is a Clinical Lecturer and Facilitator with the AFCI and is currently the Treasurer of the Ontario Chapter, as well as being on the Education Committee. Dr. Gray has received awards in recognition of his contributions to rehabilitation. He has been published in a peer-reviewed journal for his research in rehabilitation, specifically outlining the benefits to patients when a multidisciplinary approach is used in patient care. He utilizes acupuncture as an adjunctive modality to his chiropractic practice, where his experience is that the two therapies compliment each other, working in synergy, and offers patients more options for the management of their health care.
Cynthia Gokavi, MBBS, CAFCI
Dr. Gokavi is a graduate of the Gandhi Medical College, in India, and has been a physician for the government of Saskatchewan for 13 years. She has held several Executive positions with AFCI, including President, and is also an active examiner and faculty member. Dr. Gokavi is also currently the Faculty Mentoring Program Coordinator. The author of the GTT, she has travelled around the world presenting seminars on her technique. Dr. Gokavi has been the medical director of the Gokavi Acupuncture and Pain Clinic for 25 years.
Doug Freer, BScPT, CAFCI
Doug Freer has been a physiotherapist since 1973 and in private practice since 1978. He operates private physiotherapy practices in Barrie and Stroud Ontario. Doug has travelled the world as a team therapist for the Olympic and the Paralympic Games over several different years.
Doug is a faculty lecturer and examiner for AFCI. He taught in the Canadian Manual Therapy program from 1981 to 1990. He presently teaches courses in manual therapy, sports physiotherapy and acupuncture throughout Canada.
Doug continues to treat and assess clients daily. He uses his variety of skills in acupuncture, manual therapy, manipulation therapy and craniosacral skills to assist his clients on their path of recovery.
Kim Bowie, R.Ac., BScPT, CAFCI
Kim Bowie is a well known lecturer and examiner with AFCI, and has served as the AFCI President. She has been in acupuncture practice since 1984, initially under the guidance of Dr. Steven Aung and as a CAFCI since 1989. Kim is a university of Alberta graduate in Physical Therapy (1974). Her practice evolved into full acupuncture practice in 1996, as owner and director of The Acupuncture and Health Group in Calgary Alberta. She has held dual licensure as a Physical Therapist and a registered Acupuncturist since 1995. Kim’s experience with athletes and performance enhancement has developed over the last twenty years, working with athletes at all levels of sport.
